A genre is a particular style of writing that serves a particular purpose. The narrative genre is used to tell a story that engages and moves readers. The expository genre is used to explain a topic to readers. The persuasive genre is used to convince readers to agree with your position on an issue.

You can use the Web to learn more about the three main genres of writing. Read the questions below before you begin. You can find the information you need to respond to the questions on these Web sites.

Narrative Writing

Narrative Essays. This Web site is a good introduction to the narrative genre. It describes the main characteristics of narrative writing and provides an example.

Narrative Building Blocks. This Web site provides a thorough overview of the elements of narrative writing, such as characters, setting, plot, theme, and point of view. You can write more descriptive and engaging narratives when you understand how to use these elements.

Expository Writing
